Dan Lilly

78-79

My life now:

I’m getting ready to retire with 30 years of government service. US Border Patrol, INS Inspections, Customs and Border Protection. Like some of you know, I returned to Bolivia and married a Bolivian. At the time, my decision caused a great deal of drama in my family. Back then that kind of thing was frowned upon and to a extent, still is. Magaly and I will celebrate 36 years together in June. We have two daughters and two sons and they are all proud of their. Olivia’s heritage and have been down several times between them. In 1994 we were all down there together. Our daughters have blessed us with 5 grandchildren. My job sent us all on a great adventure that included 9 1/2 years in Canada. Two of our kids still reside there. We now live just south of Tucson.

One story I have not shared on the Facebook page was when I was assigned to Miraflores with a companion who hated me from the day we met in the LTM. I have no ideas as to why, but the feeling was pretty mutual. So it was a week where I was calling the shots and as we walked down the main street leading south from the stadium, I heard the sounds of a basketball practice behind a tall wall. When I told my companion I was going to check it out, his words were, “there you go breaking the rules again”. Basketball was a no no.

I walked in a saw one of the city league teams practicing. Shortly after walking in the coach saw me and came over to the doorway.

”You’re the Mormon Missionaries aren’t you.”

”Yes we are”, I replied.

I’ve been looking for you. It turns out this man had lived in Indiana for a number of years and had some of the discussions while married to his now ex-wife. She had rejected the teachings so it pretty much ended but he had remembered always and now he was ready. I cannot remember his name, and I was transferred before he was baptized. That didn’t matter to me because it’s not important who does the ordinance.

When the stake was formed in La Paz he was called to serve on the High Council.

Breaking the rules 😉
